Teenage girls are the same across the world
These young girls had managed to get hold of a stick of red lipstick, which is not common on Kiribati. With so much stacked against them, it is good to see them have some innocent fun. Statistically three of these girls will be pregnant soon, and only one will go on to study after school and obtain a good job or a career. There is little for teenagers to do on Kiribati (no ipads, unaffordable intenet, etc.) and just as they experimented with the red lipstick, they will experiment with other more adult activities, if not already.
These girls are also discriminated against when they have their their monthly menstruation, they cannot go to school or socialise, most do not have access to any sort of feminine hygiene or care. My good friend Denise is working hard with Days for Girls to try to change this situation for them.
We ladies take so much for granted in our first world lives!
