Fun in the sun

While out taking photos of the shipwrecks in Betio, Kiribati, I came across these two boys having some fun in the sun. They were playing on the seawall and shouting with glee. I asked why they were not in school as it was a week day and they were school going age. They looked at me and said “waste of time!”. Sadly they will join the more than 50% of Kiribati people who have no job and their future, when they have to abandon the atoll, will be no better. It is a sad state of Kiribati that many students do not finish school and worse still that they see no future or hope in education.
