Keeping warm

In the Alpine areas around Salzburg we wondered amongst the markets and stalls that celebrate christmas. It was cold, very cold. But then we noticed something, logs ablaze with strong warm flames. But this was no fireplace piled high with logs, it was a single tree stump. A pine tree, dried out, hollowed out, with a small breather hole near the bottom, on the side. The tree stump was placed amongst the crowd, lit through the side hole and was soon alight. It was beautiful as it warmed the market, it added to the magic of the place and told of the common sense of the people who walked around them with long coats and loose scarves. This photo is taken through the hole in the side of the blazing tree stump.
